Hong Kong & Kaohsiung

7 October 2009 2 Comments

My flight from Toronto to Auckland took me through Hong Kong. With my friend Alex living in nearby Taiwan, it made sense that I break up my travel time with a quick visit over to Kaohsiung. I’d never been to Asia before, so even leaving the airport in Hong Kong on my own was a HUGE deal for me. Looking back I laugh at myself for feeling uncertain and nervous about it, as HK is a very efficient city with a fantastic public transport system and more importantly for this Anglo, everything is signed in English as well as Chinese.

Kaohsiung on the other hand, was a completely foreign experience. I gained a new respect for people who come to Canada not knowing a lick of English. There was absolutely no way I could have made my way around town with Alex and his Taiwanese girlfriend, Joy. Joy took care of everything and made my visit memorable, despite the fact that the first rainfall in three months coincided with my arrival.
