What I saw on the penultimate day of 2008

For New Year’s I went east to Napier/Hawke’s Bay for a few days with my friends. It was a 6-hr road trip that gave me my first real taste of New Zealand outside of Auckland. I loved it. It was fantastic! This photo was taken from the deck of E’s family’s house, I couldnt imagine seeing this view every single day.

We spent 4.5 days there (not at the house with this view, but in the area), spending our days at the beach, wandering around the shops, drinking a LOT of wine, and eating a LOT of meat (BBQ’s are super popular here and the food is delicious). More photos to come (of course lol)

Note: I adjusted the photo following Scott’s comment. The original photo is here.

What a view! Nice photo and composition Kelly. Interesting foreground that leads you right into the BG. Have you gotten a feel for the clouds out there? I mean, do they types vary much? In California I noticed very few clouds compared to what we get in Buffalo. It was either overcast, or big blue sky.

I finally have your site plugged into my RSS Reader (slacking, I know!).

If I can offer some photo edit critique, you could stand to brighten this shot up a touch. Levels in PS is one quick solution. Pull that slider on the right back to the left a little until the arrow points at the beginning of the info. Right now you’ve got some headroom there in the highlights. After that, you could also move the midtone slider over to brighten. Or, you can hit similar edits in Lightroom as well.

oh, and I’m especially happy that you were able to get out to absorb some scenery!

Thanks Scott! Ive adjusted the photo and you’re right, looks much better now.

As for the clouds, they are very dramatic here. I think because I am on an island, with the Tasman Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The weather is very fluid here, with lots of different weather patterns going on. I think it would be a meteorologist’s dream to be here lol.

Often the cloud types seem to be layered, and yes, the sky feels massive here. It’s also very, very blue (again, thanks to all the water?)
